Selecting a plastic surgeon is a pivotal decision in embarking on any plastic surgery journey. The paramount consideration is to opt for a board-certified plastic surgeon affiliated with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

ASPS Member Surgeons adhere to stringent criteria:

Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) in the United States or by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for Canadian practitioners.

Completion of a minimum of six years of surgical training post-medical school, with at least three years dedicated to plastic surgery residency.

Successful passage of comprehensive oral and written examinations.

Graduation from an accredited medical school.

Participation in ongoing medical education, with a focus on patient safety every year.

Conducting surgeries in accredited, state-licensed, or Medicare-certified surgical facilities.

It’s essential not to be misled by seemingly official boards and certifications. The ABPS is endorsed by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which has been accrediting medical specialty boards since 1934. Notably, there is no ABMS-recognized certifying board specifically for “cosmetic surgery.” Opting for a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons ensures that you’re selecting a proficient, extensively trained plastic surgeon who holds board certification from the ABPS or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
